Fruit Smoothies

Watermelon Banana Smoothie with Apple Juice

Watermelon makes a light-textured smoothie with a gentle fruit flavor. Banana gives the mixture more body, and a small measure of apple juice helps everything blend. The result is a useful alternative when you want a fruit drink without the thickness of yogurt or avocado.

Start with chilled watermelon if possible. Because the fruit already contains plenty of liquid, it is easy to dilute this smoothie by adding ice or water too quickly. Prepare the measured ingredients first, blend them together, and decide only then whether the texture needs an adjustment.

Tips and variations

Seedless watermelon is convenient, although you should still check for any mature hard seeds. Cut the fruit on a clean board and measure the flesh after removing the rind. A sweeter melon will give you a better result than trying to correct bland fruit later.

If you prefer a colder smoothie, freeze the banana slices before blending. This usually changes the body more successfully than adding a large handful of ice. For a less pronounced apple flavor, try replacing part of the juice with cold water in a future batch. The drink may separate as it stands; stir it before drinking. When doubling the recipe, measure the juice rather than estimating it, since extra liquid quickly changes this particular blend.

Ingredient health benefits
