Strawberry Watermelon Ginger Spinach Smoothie

Watermelon and strawberry create a juicy base with ginger supplying a sharper accent. A little water helps blend spinach before melon releases its liquid. The result is lighter than a banana-and-yogurt smoothie and stays centered on the two summer fruits.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup spinach
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 0.75 cup watermelon, rind and seeds removed
  • 0.75 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 inch ginger root

Directions

  1. Put the measured liquid in the blender with the prepared leafy greens. Secure the lid and process until the leaves are finely dispersed, stopping the machine before scraping down the sides if needed.
  2. Add the remaining edible ingredients, including the measured fruit, nuts, seeds, or spices listed for this recipe. Blend until evenly combined. Use the machine instructions to choose a suitable speed, and stop before checking texture or scraping the jug.
  3. Taste a small spoonful after blending. If the mixture is too thick to pour, add cold water one tablespoon at a time and blend briefly again. Divide the base batch into 1 serving and enjoy promptly.

Notes

Prepared ingredients are required; additional cooking, cooling, freezing, brewing, or soaking time is excluded from the active prep estimate. Serving volume and nutrition totals are not measured.

Tips and ingredient notes

Remove melon rind and hard seeds. Peel and finely chop ginger instead of adding a long fibrous piece. Frozen strawberry provides chill, so assess the blend before deciding whether any ice is needed.

Wash fresh strawberries before removing their tops, then measure the usable fruit. Plain frozen strawberries are convenient when fresh fruit is inconsistent. Avoid sweetened dessert berries, which change the balance and make it harder to compare one batch with another.

Peel ginger if its skin is tough and chop it across its fibers into small pieces. Older roots can taste stronger and feel more fibrous. Measure the portion instead of estimating from a large piece, particularly when making a single serving.

Ingredient health benefits

  • Spinach contributes iron, used in oxygen-carrying hemoglobin.
